This year 2014 Altiplà Topographic Services SLP together with d.note , we have been awarded the Competition corresponding to the HYDROGRAPHIC CAMPAIGN SERVICE 2014 ON THE BEACHES OF EL PRAT DE LLOBREGAT.
The area under study is the seafront between the mouth of the Llobregat River and the Estany del Remolar, in the area between El Prat de Llobregat and Viladecans.
Last April, we met on the ground to plan the work with those responsible for the Topography Department of the Barcelona Port Authority and of the Consortium for the Management and Conservation of Natural Areas of the Llobregat Delta.
It is agreed that the part corresponding to the Protected Beach will also be lifted, as for the emerged part, only at water level and accompanied by Park staff, and that the boat will not come too close to maintain the privacy of a pair of birds that have nested on the berm.
We have contacted the management of the Municipal Sailing Center for the use of the roof where the fixed GPS bases will be located, both for the survey of the emerged beach and transition area and the submerged part, which we will carry out with a boat. We must thank them for the facilities they have given us.
At the beginning of June, the first campaign is carried out with the beach and maritime teams simultaneously, carrying out transects every 100 meters throughout the area and every 50 meters in the sand supply areas, entering the water from the beach to the depth covered by the boat (between -1.00 m and -1.50 m). At the end of this phase of the work, the boat carries out the bathymetric survey of the Port Ginesta area before sand extraction.
Just after finishing the dredging and sand supply, we were notified to carry out the second campaign at the beginning of May.
After consultation with the project management, it was agreed not to do a topography of the protected beach, arguing that the area would have experienced few changes or not significant enough to interfere with the breeding process of the birds. The bathymetry of the maritime part was done as in the first campaign.
In both campaigns, the survey is carried out covering the entire area, except for the foot of about 300 meters of breakwater between the La Ricarda pond and the nudist beach, which turns out to be inaccessible.
With the post-processing of the data, the corresponding maps have been obtained that will be used both for calculating sand contribution volumes and for analyzing the evolution of the beaches between seasons.
In both campaigns, the survey is carried out covering the entire area, except for the foot of about 300 meters of breakwater between the La Ricarda pond and the nudist beach, which turns out to be inaccessible, working with a multi-beam probe in the Port Ginesta extraction area and with a Mono-beam for the Prat Beaches.
In the campaigns to be carried out at the beginning of the work, the echo sounder must be calibrated by means of a reading with a sounder at different depths. The accuracy in the superficial range of the measurement is verified to be of the order of ±0.05 meters, in accordance with the standard methodology in this type of studies and the requirements assigned by the client. In general, reference is made to the requirements established in the standard S-44, Special Order Hydrographic Surveys, of the IHO.
In short, a job that has allowed us, among other things, to get to know the Llobregat Delta Reserve a little closer and enjoy the first swim of the season, and the opportunity to collaborate with Litoral Consult to obtain data from the maritime strip.
